The latest fashion trend over the past couple of months has been Face masks, which is now an accessory that I can NOT leave my house without. While COVID-19 had me staying sheltered inside the comfort of my own home there were a few chances I had to leave my house and pick up essential items from the grocery store. Putting on Sunglasses and A face mask pretty much had me incognito, but what didn’t help was the fact that all the face masks looked the same.

It wasn’t until Fashion Designers had a keen idea to create their face masks. Amidst all the chaos, companies placed effort into creating face masks for medical care providers and the general public. In doing so, the plain blue and white manifested into colorful patterns, textured fabrics, and stylish items that added individuality. And me being me, I love a good accessory so I couldn't help but purchase a few for my own satisfaction. Companies like Anthropologie, Skims, Reformation, and my personal favorite, Alice and Olivia have created not only fashion-forward but protective masks. Face Masks are in very high demand because of the asymptomatic characteristics of COVID-19, so it is essential we continue to use masks even though businesses begin to reopen. At Least now you can do it with style!

A counterargument to this entire situation though is should companies be able to profit from an item that is essentially necessary for maintaining good health? And I say yes! Because of the high demand it has become exceedingly difficult to purchase personal protective equipment, so fashion companies using extra material to create masks only helps to serve the greater good. But one thing to be considerate of when you do purchase a mask is to ensure that it has multiple layers and fits snug around your face and is secured around your ears.

Another option for those who need an extra mask is to create your own mask. This video by DIY Trefa is one that I found the most useful for creating my own DIY Face Mask. Not to mention creating your own mask is very environmentally friendly!

Hopefully after reading this we can do our part and protect those around us while not sacrificing our style. For more information visit the CDC’s website here: Use Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow Spread
